Fluids are used in Wind Power Stations for different applications. On the one hand, they are used in power transmission systems as lubricants to reduce friction of power transmission components, including plain or roller bearings and gear boxes. On the other hand, fluids like hydraulic oils are applied for energy transmission in pumps, hydraulic motors and other fluid power components of wind power stations.
Both applications require condition monitoring of the operating fluid. Fluid monitoring is done either to meet commitments regarding cleanliness (e.g. defined cleanliness classes for hydraulic fluids) or to prevent a system break-down. In the case of abrasive contaminants in the lubricating fluid, a bearing failure can be repaired on time, and larger consecutives damages can be prevented. Being a pre-requisite for preventive maintenance, fluid condition monitoring finally reduces standstill intervals of wind power stations. Comparison tests have shown that optical particle counting is much more suitable for this application than vibration measurement, as failures in the system can be detected much earlier (cf. Mister Q Step 40: Condition Monitoring of Lubricating Oil Systems).
