ABSTRACT

Pore structure of separators is a critical property for efficiency of batteries and fuel cells. As such, porosity characterization is of great interest to those developing, as well as those manufacturing, these materials. This paper will discuss the two most frequently used techniques for porosity characterization: porosimetry and porometry. The strengths and limitations of both testing techniques will be discussed with focus on appropriate test selection to obtain optimal results.

This paper will also describe the new user-friendly instruments now available from Porous Materials Inc.(PMI) and the recent advances that have made these techniques more useful for those involved with product development, product improvement, and quality control in the battery separator industry. This paper shall introduce the new Micro-Flow Porometer for battery separator testing will be discussed and additional advances in porosimetry shall be introduced.

INTRODUCTION

Pormetry and porosimetry techniques have undergone tremendous growth and development during the last decade. Part of this growth was stimulated by the recent development of new types of batteries which require the testing of new battery separators with wide-ranging characteristics. Additionally, older, more conventional, battery separators are now being subjected to increasing scrutiny for improved performance and reliability. The need for better porosity testing has thus become imperative in the battery industry. PMI has been developing and manufacturing testing instrumentation for over seventeen years and has developed some of the most advanced instruments for testing porous materials such as battery separators.

The critical physical properties of a porous material, such as a battery separator, include the following:

1. Largest Pore Size (Bubble Point) - Determines the largest particle which can pass through the material.
2, Average Pore Diameter - Characterizes average pore size.
3. Pore Size Distribution - Characterizes material uniformity/non-uniformity.
4. Gas Permeability -Determines the rate of gaseous transfer across a material.
5. Liquid Permeability - Determines the rate of liquid transfer across a material.
6. Filter Intergrit - A more accurate check of largest pore size.
7. Total Pore Volume -Checks for diffusional flow through a filter
8. Pore Tortuosity : Characterizes pore structure.

All of the physical properties above, except for total pore volume and tortuosity, can be obtained via Capillary Flow Porometry testing provided by the PMI Complete Filter Analyzer. As will be discussed in further detail, the Micro-Flow Porometer increases the accuracy of the gas permeability test for sample material with extremely low permeability. Total pore volume and pore tortuosity (number seven and eight above) can be best determined using porosimetry techniques. The recently developed Aquapore Porosimeter,  which will be briefly discussed towards the end of this paper, will gradually replace mercury intrusion as the testing method of choice for separators with sub-micron pore structure.
