PERMI Application note : Stable quality and 15 % more production rate

Problem We noticed, that we have sometimes issues with our end product formation and printability. We are a quality leader, so these concerns got our highest intention. After a several research and troubleshooting projects we noticed that prior the quality issues we had pH variation in our pulp. However, the drainage rate of the pulp (CSF values) were constant so we wanted to understand our process more in details and installed PERMI to monitor it.
Solution After a couple of days PERMI collecting data from our process we got the answer! Our porosity was not constant even though CSF showed stable values. Our refi ners were following the CSF so without PERMI we had no chance to react and correct the situation. As a result, we started to run refi ners according to PERMI measurement and our quality level has been stable since that. As an added bonus we could speed up our grade changes and increase the production rate by 15 %!

Learning Pulping process has many variations and the quality of pulp fl uctuates. These fl uctuations may turn out as quality defects if you are not able to record your process carefully. PERMI is probably the best indicator of any process variations as it measures on-line the air permeability and thus the web structure. By installing PERMI we recorded the porosity variations and could control the refi ners better.
